Algiers Homes for sale
Algiers is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans, being founded as early as 1719, and growing outward from a privately owned plantation. The homes, some of which are more than 100-150 years old, lend an historical and yet timeless quality to this neighborhood. There are pillared plantation-style houses and the characteristic New Orleans shotgun and cottage, renovated to state of the art luxury.
The Canal Street Ferry, or Algiers Ferry, connects Algiers Point to Canal St. in the Central Business District of New Orleans, making Algiers an easy commute for those who work in the city, yet wish to live in historical Algiers. In addition, many exciting initiatives are flowering in the historical ground of Algiers, one of which is the school system. After Hurricane Katrina, the public schools in Algiers were converted to a charter school system called the Algiers Charter Schools Association, which continually seeks to look forward and strive for quality education.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of New Orleans culture is the abundance of festivals. No matter what time of year it is, there is a festival in the city celebrating some aspect of the life, whether it be Jazz music, the cuisine, Mardi Gras, or simply joie de vivre. Sometimes there does not need to be a reason to celebrate. Algiers breathes according to this same rhythm, with many festivals such as Old Algiers Riverfest held each spring at Algiers Point. Residents are quite proud of their neighborhood and enjoy showcasing their homes and properties.
