mardi-gras-20111_468

The official kick-off of the 2011 Mardi Gras season starts on February 19th at 6:30 p.m. with the Krewe du Vieux in the French Quarter. Thus begins the biggest celebration in New Orleans where locals can watch as the population swells to over double its normal size. Expect the crowds, lines, and road closures to last until Fat Tuesday on March 8th.  So, how do you survive the Mardi Gras frenzy when you live in the famous French Quarter? It is simple with these quick and easy tips.

1. Make note of street closures. Remember there is at least one parade almost every day starting February 19th. Keep a list of parade dates, times, and general routes in your car. Streets are closed often closed hours before and after the parades. Keeping this information easily…

Twas the Night Before Christmas

“Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”  In December when the weather is cold, and daylight fades early, the streets assume a particular holiday stillness.

I call it a holiday stillness because nighttime in December includes homes lit up with lights and bay windows looking into living rooms all decked out with Christmas trees and knick knacks and presents.  I always look forward to coming home at the end of the day, but during the holidays the desire is even stronger to get home to the warmth and good food and my family.

However, yesterday evening I ventured out into the cold to drive from Hammond into New Orleans with my boyfriend Josh and our 15 month old to…

You Could Be Home; in the French Quarter

Have you ever seen those billboards advertising homes in the suburbs that proclaim “You Could Be Home?”  Those words crossed through my mind several times today as I walked up and down the French Quarter.

When I made up my mind to go to the French Quarter for the Satchmo Festival, I knew that getting down there was part of the experience.  Getting to the French Quarter is actually an easier process now that I live in Louisiana.  I know what it is like to set out on a winter day from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with snow falling, to visit my sister at UNO.  My family is originally from New Orleans, but it has been years since we lived in the heart of the city.  I live on the Northshore of the Lake, so this morning I knew it would…

Did the Saints really win the Superbowl? I am still in shock!

Let me start off by saying that I am one of the most die hard Saints fans walking this planet. I can remember the bad days as if it were yesterday. From John Fourcade to Jim Everett then to the new hope of Aaron Brooks. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting with my dad in his car listening to 870 am as the Saints lost yet another game.

On to the Drew Brees and Sean Payton era. In 2006 their was something magical about the Saints, we only missed the Super Bowl by one game. Two years passed which we missed the playoffs, and the frustration started to set in with everyone.  I knew this team built by Sean Payton could do some great things, but never did I imagine the following year we would be Super Bowl Champs. Maybe all the years of pain and being…

Cotton Mill Condos are now FHA approved

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 at 11:16am. 481 Views, 0 Comments.

Great news for the Cotton Mill Condos. In todays market, financing a condo is tough. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have tightened their guidelines with respect to condo financing. FHA is a type of loan that helps first time home buyers qualify for their first purchase. Typically condos are not FHA approved (there are some that are) and in order for a buyer to qualify with an FHA loan for a condo would require what is called a "spot approval." Now spot approvals are a things of the past, which makes it even tougher for first time home buyers to buy a condo.

Being that the Cotton Mill is FHA approved, I expect sales to pick up in the building. The marketability of the Cotton Mill has changed over night. If you are looking for a condo in a great location,…
